Unspoken Rules

We are asked to play by the rules and that’s the thing.

There are spoken rules which are clear and overt in a workplace. Easy.

But what about the unspoken rules?

There are usually lots of them.

And different layers of them.

There are unspoken expectations that we may feel from our teammates.

But we don’t really know for sure.

Or don’t know how to express what we are feeling.

How do we discern what the unspoken rules are and how to play the game?

How do we get clear about the way things are done around our workplace?

It’s simple.

We get together to understand WHO we are as a collective.

We determine:

  • Why we are here.
  • What drives us as individuals and as a collective
  • What we are passionate about and what we would like to ultimately contribute to.
  • Who the business is and what we are wanting to achieve together.
  • What we love about our role and what we don’t like about our role.
  • What’s working in the business and what’s not really working.
  • How we best serve our customers and stakeholder relationships.
  • How we want them to feel during and after their experience with us.
  • How we want to operate.
  • How we want to show up at work and in our marketplace.
  • And what value we have to offer our customers and stakeholder relationships.

I have facilitated many teams from varied industries, even teaching staff at high schools, through my Creating Brand Energy Process, and what I have found is that team members usually find that they are much more alike than they may have originally thought.

Team members get to know each other on a deeper level that is never reached at the water cooler.

There is also a sense of relief when they agree together on what they really want and how they want to operate.

The end result is they determine WHO they are – together.

So now they are conscious and aware.

Clear expectations and intentions have been set.

And it’s easy to know what the right thing to do for the business is.

Every action, attitude, behaviour and expression is either aligned with WHO they are or not.

The unspoken unknown rules become known, integrated and embraced.
